Italy is a dream destination for many travelers. However, before you embark on your Italian adventure, it’s essential to be aware of certain aspects that will ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. So, here are seven things you should keep in mind before visiting Italy.
Pay attention to the dress code
Be mindful of your attire when you’re not at the beach. In some Italian coastal towns during summer, it’s forbidden to walk around shirtless or in a swimsuit, unless you’re on the beach itself. This regulation has been enforced in places like Sorrento, Gallipoli, Tropea, Caorle, and others. Make sure to check the local regulations of the town where you plan to spend your holidays to avoid getting fined.
Avoid the restaurant tourist traps
When visiting Italy, as a general rule, I suggest to steer clear of restaurants with staff outside trying to lure you in, those where you mostly see tourists, or those offering non-Italian dishes on the menu. Such establishments are often found around main tourist hotspots and are known for providing limited variety and low-quality food at inflated prices. Instead, explore off-the-beaten-track areas to find more authentic and high-quality dining options.
Watch where you’re driving
For travelers using a car, be aware of the ZTL areas (Zona a Traffico Limitato or Limited Traffic Zones) found in many towns and cities across Italy. These areas are clearly marked with signs indicating the hours they are in operation. Entering a ZTL area during restricted hours can result in receiving a hefty fine, which may arrive weeks after your trip. Be aware of the coperto
The coperto is a cover charge applied by restaurants. It’s usually no more than a couple of euros per person and applies to anyone eating at the restaurant, not just tourists. Italians don’t expect a tip on top of this so in this respect it’s a far more straightforward system than you get in the USA.
Be aware of predetermined cabs’ rates
In several Italian cities, such as Naples, Pisa, Rome, Cagliari, Padua, and others, predetermined fares are in effect for taxi rides to specific destinations like city centers or airports. These predetermined rates apply to both urban and suburban routes. This means that when you take a cab to these designated areas, the fares will be fixed according to the established tariffs, ensuring transparency and preventing potential overcharging.
As a traveler, it’s essential to be aware of these predetermined rates before visiting Italy to avoid any misunderstandings with taxi drivers. However, when heading to the city center or airport, make sure to confirm the fixed fare with the driver before starting your journey. It’s also advisable to carry some cash with you, as some taxis may prefer cash payments.
Wear appropriate shoes
You’ll find you’re going to walk a lot in Italy. Many streets are old and uneven and mountain path can be narrow and steep, so bring sensible shoes. Ditch the flip flops and heels and opt for something more comfortable! Wearing proper shoes will also prevent the possibility of injury.
Pack the mosquito repellent
Whilst this won’t apply on every trip and will depend on when and where you are visiting, we do recommend packing some mosquito repellent, particularly if travelling during the summer months and to a more rural location in Italy. Using repellent will ensure you’re not covered in red itchy bites during your Italy trip!
By keeping these seven essential tips in mind before visiting Italy, you can make the most of your trip and ensure a memorable experience. Whether you’re exploring the historic streets of Rome, strolling through the romantic canals of Venice, or indulging in the beauty of Tuscany, Italy will captivate you with its charm, warmth, and timeless allure. Buon viaggio! (Have a good trip!)
