Indeed, in San Benedetto del Tronto you can see two ancient towers, the Guelfa Tower and the Gualtieri Tower.
The Guelfa tower is a defensive tower built around the XIV century. It was part of a big fortress that unfortunately was destroyed by Gentile da Modigliano long ago.
The Gualtieri Tower, instead, is 20 meters tall and it’s older than the Guelfa Tower. In fact, it was built around the XII century. The Gualtieri Tower is located in San Benedetto Alta, the oldest and highest part of the city. So, from there you can have a good panoramic view.
If you like visiting churches, one of the most important churches in San Benedetto del Tronto is San Benedetto Church, dedicated to the martyr of the same name.
The Church was built in the XI century and modified in the XVIII century. It hosts many ancient epigraphs, gravestones, some statues, several paintings and also some relics of San Benedetto.
Finally, in San Benedetto, you can also see some monuments. The most famous are Monumento al Pescatore – monument dedicated to the fisher – and Monumento al gabbiano Jonathan – monument dedicated to the seagull Jonathan.
Monumento al Pescatore, by Cleto Capponi, shows a fisher who’s playing a trumpet to signal some danger.
Monumento al gabbiano Jonathan, instead, is by Mario Lupo and is dedicated to the seagull Jonathan Livingston, the main character if the famous book Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
Finally, near San Benedetto there is also the Sentina natural reserve. It’s an area of 177 hectares where there are only few rural buildings. You can visit it by foot but also by bike.
In the natural reserve you can see different birds such as cranes and kingfishers, few mammals such as bats, nutrias, and some amphibious such as toads.
