Italy has incredibly beautiful landscapes, lovely and medieval towns and a rich culture, so it’s no surprise that many film directors decided to set some of their movies in Italy. Now the question is, do you know which movies were set nel Bel Paese? If not, you’re about to learn the titles of three movies set in Italy.
Un incantevole aprile (Enchanted April)
The first of the movies set in Italy that I want to put in this list is Un incantevole aprile. This movie is based on the novel of the same name written by Elizabeth von Arnim. It tells the story of four British women, with very different backgrounds and personalities, who decide to leave England for some time and go on holiday to Italy.
They choose to rent a castle on the shores of the Mediterranean. After many life experiences, they’ll soon realize that that magical place is healing all their sorrow and pain, giving them back hope and love.
The Castle in the movie is Castle Brown, in the wonderful Portofino. Who wouldn’t want to spend some time there?
Chiamami col tuo nome (Call me by your name)
This movie is based on the book of the same name written by André Aciman. It tells the story of Elio Perlman, a 17-year-old, who lives in Italy with his parents and of Olivier, a 24-year-old student, who goes to live with Elio’s family for the summer after Elio’s father invited him.
At first Elio thinks to have nothing in common with Olivier. He is an introvert, while Olivier seems to be more extrovert and confident. However, as time passes, Elio finds himself increasingly attracted to Olivier. So, he starts to spend more and more time with him, until one day, he discovers that Olivier is also attracted to him and the two kiss for the very first time.
Long story short, at the end of the Summer Olivier has to go back home in America and so the two lovers say goodbye to each other. However, some time later Olivier gets back in touch with Elio’s family and…I don’t want to spoiler the end so if you want to know if Olivier and Elio get back together, I suggest you to watch the movie or read the book.
The movie was mainly filmed in the beautiful Villa Albergoni, a 17th century mansion in Moscazzano, Lumbardy.
Sotto il sole della Toscana (Under the Tuscan sun)
Finally, the first of the movies set in Italy that I want to put in this list is the famous Sotto il sole della Toscana. This movie is based on the book of the same name written by Frances Mayes. It tells the story of Frances, a writer who, one day, discovers that her husband is cheating on her. So, she immediately files for divorce. However, sad and depressed, she cannot write anymore. Her best friend, Patti, is worried about her situation, so she decided to give her a ticket for a tour to Tuscany.
So, Frances leaves for Italy. During one of the tour’s stops, she sees an old villa for sale and she decides to buy it. She renovates the house and begins her new life there. She’ll find new friends, she’ll find herself being happy again and, maybe, she’ll find love too.
The movie was mainly shot in Tuscany, in the town of Cortona. However, there are also shots of Montepulciano, Rome and Positano.
