Il castello di Sirmione è una fortificazione lacustre che si trova nella città di Sirmione di fronte al bellissimo lago di Garda. E’ uno dei castelli Scaligeri più belli e più ben preservati in Italia.
Sirmione Castle is a lakeside fortification that stands in the town of Sirmione in front of the beautiful lake Garda. It’s one of the most beautiful and most well-preserved Scaliger castles in Italy.
Storia e struttura – History and structure
Il castello di Sirmione è stato costruito durante la metà del 14esimo secolo a scopo difensivo. Nel 15esimo secolo è stato ulteriormente migliorato e le sue strutture difensive sono state rafforzate.
Sirmione castle was built in the middle of the 14th century for defensive purposes. In the 15th century it was further improved and its defensive structures were strengthened.
In passato, il castello era facilmente raggiungibile sia dall’esterno di Sirmione che dall’interno grazie a dei ponti levatoi. Oggi, invece, è possibile accedere al castello solo passando dalla città.
In the past, the castle was easily accessible from both outside Sirmione and from the town itself thanks to drawbridges. Today, instead, it’s possible to enter the castle only from the town itself
Quando si arriva al portico centrale, si prendono le scale che portano al camminamento di ronda. Una volta lì, si può godere della spettacolare vista del Lago di Garda.
When you get to the central portico, you take the stairs that lead you to the walkway. Once there, you can enjoy an amazing view of Lake Garda.
Un’altra cosa interessante da vedere al Castello di Sirmione è il museo, posizionato all’interno del portico interno. Lì si può leggere la storia del castello e si possono vedere reperti romani come mosaici e bassorilievi.
Another interesting thing to see in Sirmione castle is the museum, located inside the internal portico. There you can read the story of the castle and you can also see Roman relics such as mosaics, bas-reliefs.
La leggenda – The legend
Come ogni castello italiano anche il castello di Sirmione ha la sua leggenda. E, ovviamente, è tragica.
As every ancient Italian castle, also Sirmione castle has its own legend. And, of course, it’s a tragic one.
Racconta la storia di due innamorati, Ebengardo e Arice. La coppia trascorreva una vita felice finché una notte tempestosa un cavaliere bussò alla loro porta chiedendo riparo. La coppia fu così gentile da ospitarlo. Però, durante la notte, il cavaliere, sbalordito dalla bellezza di Arice, la raggiunse nella sua stanza. Spaventata, Arice iniziò a urlare. Per fermarla, il cavaliere la pugnalò. Quando Ebengardo entrò nella stanza, Arice era già morta. Accecato dalla rabbia, prese il pugnale dalle mani del cavaliere e lo uccise.
It tells the story of two lovers, Ebengardo and Arice. The couple had a happy life until one stormy night a knight knocked at their door asking for shelter. The couple was so gentle to host the knight. However, during the night, the knight, stunned by Arice’s beauty, joined her in her bedroom. Scared, Arice started screaming. To stop her, the knight stubbed her. When Ebengardo entered the room, Arice was already dead. Blinded by rage, he took the dagger from the hands of the knight and killed him.
La leggenda racconta che durante le notti tempestose si può vedere l’anima di Ebengardo vagare per il castello in cerca di Arice.
The legend says that during stormy nights you can see the soul of Ebengardo wandering in the castle looking for Arice.
