If you decide to rent a car in Italy, you’ll soon discover that there are many Italian borghi in the Italian countryside.
Italian borghi are small villages built around a castle and usually surrounded by walls. If you’ve never seen an Italian burg in your life, you have to. They can be extremely fascinating, sometimes even more than the most famous Italian big cities.
Today, I’d like to talk about an extremely beautiful Italian burg: Brisighella.
Brisighella
Brisighella is one of the many typical Italian borghi that are definitely worth a visit.
It is in the province of Ravenna, in Emilia-Romagna, and it’s considered one of the most beautiful Italian borghi.
The peculiarity of Brisighella are the three rocky peaks that dominate the village. On each one of these three peaks you can find different historic buildings.
On the first peak you find La Rocca, a thirteenth century fortress. It can be visited only in certain hours and you can reach it from the village by climbing some stairs.
On the second peak you find Il Monticino, a sanctuary built in the 18th century.
Finally, on the third peak you find La Torre dell’Orologio, a clock tower, built in the 19th century.
Of course, from every peak you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surroundings.
The three peaks aren’t the only things that make Brisighella one of the most enchanting Italian borghi.
Even the town itself is incredibly picturesque with its colours and the typical streets. One of the most known streets in Brisighella is Via del Borgo, also known as Via degli Asini – the Donkeys street.
This street was originally part of the town’s defenses and is perched above the ground level. It was also used by men and donkeys to transport gypsum from the nearby mine. If you pay attention, you can still notice the ancient stables.
If you like ancient ruins, in Brisighella you can also see the ruins of a 10th century Castle.
Instead, if you like thermal baths, in Brisighella there are some spa that use natural mountain waters.
Finally, another thing Brisighella is famous for is olive oil. Thanks to the microclimate that there’s in this Italian borgo, people from Brisighella can grow delicious olives and grapes. And the result of this, is of course tasty wine and olive oil.
In short, Brisighella is a peculiar Italian town that is definitely worth visiting.
