Sooner or later language learners develop some effective habits that help them improve their language skills.
Successful language learners have usually two or more effective habits in common.
I talked about some of them a few weeks ago in Three habits successful language learners have.
Today I’d like to add three more effective habits language learners have.
1. Learn something new every day
Learning something every day can be hard. Indeed, we can make up many excuses not to learn: we’re too tired, we don’t have time, choose the one you prefer.
So, we have to develop a new habit but the truth is developing new habits can be extremely difficult at the beginning. We have to keep pushing until we find it natural.
Successful language learners have managed to do so. They usually dedicate 10 or more minutes every day to improve their language skills.
Those minutes can be used to learn new vocabulary, review a grammatical topic, complete some exercises, speak with Italians or just write something in Italian.
The important thing is to keep learning something every day, even for just a few minutes. Repetition allows you to to develop a new habit, making it natural for you to learn new things daily.
2. Fail often but keep learning
One of the effective habits language learners have acquired is that making mistakes isn’t something you should be ashamed of.
Indeed, making mistakes isn’t necessarily a bad thing and is part of the learning process. No one can learn a language without making mistakes!
The important thing is how you react to these mistakes. Successful language learners know that they have to consider mistakes as a chance to learn and improve.
So, each time you learn something new, practice right away, make a lot of mistakes and try to learn from them.
3. Adopt a healthy lifestyle
Another habit successful language learners have is to have a healthy lifestyle.
In fact, having a healthy lifestyle can help you learn more effectively.
This includes of course getting enough sleep, do some exercise and eat healthy food.
Indeed, sleeping well improves your memory. By contrast, doing exercise allows your brain to create new cells. This will improve your concentration, and allow you to make connections more easily.
Finally, eating healthy allows you to process information faster.
What about you? Are you a successful language learner? Do you have one or more of these habits?
